New Kids – Baby Milk Goats Have Arrived!

After much impatience on my part, our first set of baby goats have arrived – Cream had two little girl kids, or goatlets as I like to call them so as to not confuse them with my own children. *laughing*

And now, of course, pictures -

Goatlet #1 – A pretty little light-red, dappled roan kid with a bald face. Gorgeous.

Goatlet #2 – Darker red colored with a little bit of white on her face, and two tiny white spots on her back.

I have to admit – I’m glad these two are little girls as it bodes well for their future. :-) Two healthy females, already trying to get around and curious about who we are. I guess I need to figure out how to do this whole milk goat thing now, eh?

All About Me Paper Album Resources

The fantastic new webinar by Sue Benedict features one idea that even this busy mother can see herself actually getting done – the All About Me Paper Album. When I got these extra resources from Sue, she mentioned that she had been filling many requests for them. So here I have compiled them all for easy-non-filling-Sue’s-inbox-access!

about-me-interview-sheet – This document will have a series of questions and prompts to get you started on your biographical album. You could even have someone fill this out ahead of time.

all-about-me-page-photo-handout – This is a sample album shows what you might do for a female. So beautiful. And the decorative stuff is already coordinated for you, making it easy for even the Color-Matching-Challenged. :-D

all-about-me-guy-version-visual – And just so we don’t have the men in our lives feeling left out – here is the sample of how you could put something together for a special grandpa, dad or husband.

And here are the title pages if you don’t want to have to think up your own. Just print it out on archival quality paper like the Photo Mounting Paper I get from my Creative Memories Consultant. all-about-me-words1 all-about-me-words2

To see more photos of sample albums (Some have done “what I love about Quilting” or albums featuring themselves for a child or grandchild!) visit the Creative Memories Scraps ‘n’ Stories Facebook Group.

Make Money on Blog or Website Without Google Adsense

While I do use Google Adsense on my site, I wanted to share with you guys another option for making money on your website or blog in an inobstrusive way.  Exit Junction is an advertising revenue company that will pay you when readers exit your website.

For example, if you search “Effective web writing tweets” in google, the first search result that appears is my SEO Tips from Twitter post. When someone clicks on a search engine result to enter my blog, then uses the back arrow to exit my blog, ExitJunction will bring them automatically to an ad page with related ad results. If the reader clicks the ad, you earn revenue.

I love that there is a potential for earning revenue without having too much clutter and business on my site! Google adsense is ok – but this gives me a unique way to earn revenue without having to add link ads (which I cannot stand) or even more sidebar clutter.

Additionally – ExitJunction rewards referrals, so once you check out the program please use my referral link if you decide to join. As with everything else I’ve tried on the web, nothing is going to make you rich “quick”, however I have earned more through ExitJunction than I have through Google Adsense so far, so it’s definitely been worthwhile for me personally. And since you aren’t using up valuable real estate on your website to test it out, what have you got to lose?

How to Brainstorm Article Ideas

One of my favorite ways to help me think of new article ideas is through brainstorming. As a freelance writer it is important to always have something to write about! But how do you think of new ideas? For me, especially when I need to create a large body of content around a specific topic, brainstorming is highly effective.

I like to brainstorm on paper. Usually large sheets of paper where I can write and scribble and scrawl down myriads of writing ideas quickly. And visually. However – for today’s post I’ll go through the process online just so you can see it. Here’s how I brainstorm article ideas for web content production.

Start With Your Main Writing Topic and then Be Specific

This is especially helpful if you are writing a lot of articles over a long period of time about a specific topic. For example, I am the Plants & Bulbs Feature Writer at Suite101.com. So every week I need to be able to write an article related to plants or bulbs somehow.

So I’ll start with my main topic first and then begin to make it more and more specific until the individual ideas are single articles or “content webs” (article series). Plants > Plants for Certain Landscape Situations > Plants for Winter Garden Interest > Evergreens > Variegated Evergreens/Conifer Plants/ Colored Evergreen Foliage/Broad Leaf Evergreen Shrubs/ Evergreen Perennial Plants

See how the thought process broke everything down smaller and smaller? What types of plants do you need for winter interest? Evergreen plants! But even “Evergreen Plants” would be a broad topic. An entire book, in fact. So you could easily break that down even further into “Evergreen Shrubs” and “Evergreen Perennials”. Now you can see that through brainstorming “Winter Interest in the Garden” became enough articles for an entire month or two! Plus, when I decided to turn the idea into an ebook later, I could easily do so because I had already mapped out the entire article series.

Write Down Everything First – Edit Your Article Ideas Later

The absolute worst thing you can do while brainstorm article ideas is to limit yourself in any way. Don’t write down “Winter Landscaping” and then think, “Oh, that’s a dumb idea to write about in April when everyone is planning spring and summer gardens!”. Write it down! Your goal for this brainstorming session is to write down enough article ideas to keep you going for MONTHS. I’m serious!

When I began working as the Plants and Bulbs Feature Writer in October of 2006 I brainstormed several article series ideas on a large sheet of my son’s construction paper. Last month I copied the last of the ideas down into a notebook paper and threw the large construction paper away, but I still jotted down about a dozen more ideas I haven’t used yet. In over two years. There is absolutely no reason why you cannot brainstorm a year’s worth of article ideas in about an hour of free association brainstorming. If you are having trouble coming up with ideas – leave a comment and let me know what you are wanting to write about! Maybe I can help you brainstorm an article or two or ten.

Myths About Freelance Writing for the Web

Recent comments, discussions and emails from readers has highlighted some common web writing myths. Here are the top three frequently heard myths about writing web content.

All Content Sites are Scams and Worthless Content Mills

While there are certainly many worthless websites out there preying on freelance writers, this is nothing new to the writing world. How many countless writers have been taken advantage of through fake agents, print-on-demand schemes, and “contests” that did not deliver as expected? The fact that bad apples exist on some web sites, does not mean all websites are scam writing sites. Check out the Making Money blog posts to get specific details about websites I am personally familiar with.

If I Write an Interesting Article I Will Make Thousands of Dollars

Now, I like to think that I write interesting articles, and I have made thousands of dollars writing for the web, however the one does not necessarily follow the other. In order to make money with web content, readers have to be able to find your articles. That means you must employ good SEO practices. SEO means “Search Engine Optimization” and is just a fancy abbreviation for saying that Google and other search engines need to be able to find your article.

Writing for Websites Doesn’t Pay Well

This is a huge myth! While it may seem slow to begin with, web writing is very much a long-term game. You might make only a handful of change from the first dozen or so articles. As you continue writing, however, and build up a strong body of good quality content, you will find that instead of earning a couple pennies per article you are now earning $1 or more per article. Per month. And those earnings continue to come in each month as readers continue to visit your content. This residual aspect of web writing is why I no longer contribute to sites that only pay upfront and do not have residual income potential in their revenue system. I can make more in the long run with smaller monthly payments, than one slightly-larger upfront payment.

Can You Make Money Writing for Suite101?

In my recent blog post about writing for Examiner.com, a reader left a comment about Suite101. I’d like to discuss what a writer can expect working with Suite101.com and the potential for pay there.

Suite101 is an e-media magazine that has been around for several years, though only in the present form for a couple years. As a beginning writer I appreciated the editorial oversight, and now, as a more experienced web writer, I appreciate the strong standing in the search engines.

There are two levels of writers at Suite101 – Feature Writers are over a particular topic and must publish one article per week in that topic area. I am the Plants and Bulbs Feature Writer. Contributing Writers have to publish only ten articles every three months in any topic of their choosing (the ten articles do not need to be in the same topic area – contribute to as many topics as you desire!).

What Does Suite101.com Pay?

Suite101.com pays purely off ad-click revenue share. In an older revenue model Suite101 paid a certain amount of money per page view, however they no longer pay according to a page view system. Obviously page views are good since the more people visit your articles, the greater your chances for garnering ad clicks. You could theoretically have ten thousand visitors and not a single ad click, however this has not been my personal experience. I make a tidy little sum each month off those seemingly innocuous ads.

It will take awhile to build up a decent paycheck, but the long-term revenue potential is very high. It might take me a couple hours a week to write my Suite101 articles (I try to post 5-8 articles per month). The first month I probably made $.26 or something ridiculously horrible like that. However, those first few articles continue to earn me money. They have continued to earn me a few dollars every month for the past two years! I now earn enough every month to cover my mortgage payment and even when I took the month off to have a baby I still made enough to pay my mortgage. Brilliant!

What Rights Does Suite101.com Keep?

Suite101.com requires that articles published on the site are fresh, new pieces not currently available elsewhere on the web. And they require exclusive web rights to that content for one year. So you never actually loose your content at all – you just sort of loan it out to Suite101 for a year. *grin*

To me, the only way I would participate in a site that takes all my rights completely is if they pay quite a bit upfront. Otherwise, I’m loosing the ability to make money off that content in other ways, for no guaranteed return! With Suite101 I can put my articles into ebooks, sell one to a print magazine (as I did with this Intake Procedures for Massage Therapists article) or use them as a hubpage about lavender essential oil when my year is up.

How Do I Join Suite101?

All writers must apply to Suite101.com and submit some sample articles. Suite101 is known to be rather picky, as only 20-25% of all writers who apply are accepted! Find me on the forums when you join and say hello.
